First double defence for juniors

The Daily Telegraph Junior Golf Championship finished with the first ever double defence.

Abu Dhabi: The Daily Telegraph Junior Golf Championship finished with the first ever double defence.

The tournament was won by 18-year old Stiggy Hodgson and 16-year old Carly Booth who retained their boys' and girls' trophies.

In securing her stunning victory, Booth led from start to finish at the Abu Dhabi Golf Club.

The 16-year old Scot ended the third and final round at eight under par, some six shots ahead of her nearest challenger, Alex Peters.

"It feels good. I'm really pleased and it's been a hard week but I played well," said Booth.

"I had a big lead and knew it was there for the taking but you never know until the last pin.

"I creamed a three wood approach into the 18th and I knew for sure then. I took a deep breath and knew it was done - I did what I came to do," said Booth, who became the youngest ever Curtis Cup player this year when she represented Britain and Ireland against the USA when 15-years-old.

While Booth breezed through the girls' competition, the boys' trophy was decided after a nail-biting play-off.

Tournament leader, Tommy Fleetwood, the England Boys captain and this year's British Amateur Championship runner-up, started the day two shots ahead of fellow Englishman, Hodgson.

But they finished level and headed into a playoff. On the second hole each had long putts. Fleetwood missed his 25-footer, while Hodgson held his own 15-footer to clinch the win.

"Retaining the trophy gives me great satisfaction. I'm the first boy in over a decade to do so and it's nice to make a little bit of history," said Hodgson.
