A readers poll on gulfnews.com saw Zidane emerge as an overwhelming favourite for player of the tournament.
Zizou received just short of 52% of the total vote, collecting almost five times as many clicks as his nearest rival - Italian defender Fabio Cannavaro.
And while his star faded a little after the red card (Zidane had claimed around 60% of the vote on Sunday afternoon) the result was still a ringing endorsement of his play throughout the competition.
Elsewhere on the world wide web it was a similar story, as forums, polls and football websites across the globe focused in on Zidane and his legacy.
More than two third of the readers of television news channel CNN's website decided that Zidane would be remembered as a hero, rather than a villain.
In the United Kingdom - a country not known for its francophilia -? around 60% of Sky News online readers opted for the 'hero' mantle as well.

And of course as is de rigueur on the internet, the amateur comedians have been quick to poke affectionate fun at the incident.
Within hours of the incident there were already at least two animated games which allowed players to recreate the infamous Berlin butt.
But thankfully, it seems Zizou will be remembered for his skills, rather than his ills.
