United captain Vidic to return next season

Injured defender making progress, while boss Ferguson flies to Germany to watch Kagawa

London: Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic should be fit to make his long-awaited return from injury in time for the new season in August, manager Alex Ferguson said yesterday.

Central defender Vidic has been absent since December when the Serbian ruptured his cruciate knee ligament during a Champions League match against Basel.

"Vida won't be ready for going on the tour but hopefully he'll be ready for the start of the season," Ferguson said.

United have planned a lengthy tour ahead of the 2012-13 season which starts on the weekend of August 18/19.

"We sent him to a complex in Spain last week and he enjoyed it. It gave him a break mentally as it's not easy," added the Scot.

"He's been the only one in the gymnasium in the last couple of months or so as we've been reasonably injury-free. He's not running, he's just been in the gym."

Japan star Shinji Kagawa continued to remain tight-lipped about his future after scoring in Borussia Dortmund's 5-2 German Cup final hammering of Bayern Munich, watched by Sir Alex Ferguson.

The Manchester United manager was at Berlin's Olympic Stadium on Saturday and saw Kagawa hit Dortmund's opening goal and set up the first of striker Robert Lewandowski's hat-trick as Champions League finalists Bayern were routed.

Kagawa still has a year to run on his contract, but has made no secret of his desire to move to the Premier League with United favourites to sign him.
