St Xavier's and Kannur Brothers in quarterfinals

After a night of hectic activity when each team played twice, eight teams advanced to the quarterfinals of the Abu Dhabi Shakthi Theatre's A.K.G memorial football tournament played at the Kerala Social Centre on Sunday night.

Abu Dhabi: After a night of hectic activity when each team played twice, eight teams advanced to the quarterfinals of the Abu Dhabi Shakthi Theatre's A.K.G memorial football tournament played at the Kerala Social Centre on Sunday night.

St Xaviers, Truvandrum, Kannur Brothers, Spinneys Abu Dhabi, ISC Al Ain A, Rahan's Ottappalam, Express Money, United Kasargod and Mina Sports are the teams that will figure in the final night's action and vie for the Shakthi Ever-Rolling Trophy sponsored by the Al Fara'a Group.

Arjuna Award winner and former Indian captain I.M Vijayan inaugurated the event along with A.L Siyad and other members of Shakthi and Kerala Social Centre.

"It is very pleasing to see so many teams take part in this event and such a large crowd. I am told by the organisers that this event will be much bigger next year and that will indeed be a big boost to the football-loving Indians here in the UAE," said Vijayan, one of India's greatest strikers and currently an actor in Malayalam and Tamil movies.

In Sunday night's matches Spinneys Abu Dhabi drew 1-1 with United Kasargod, St Xaviers Trivandrum beat Kannur Brothers 1-0, Rahan's Ottappalam beat Yuvakalasahithi 2-0, Mina Sports lost 0-3 to Express Money, ISC Al Ain B lost 0-2 to Kannur Brothers, Spinneys beat Victors Kannur 2-1, ISC Al Ain A beat Rahan's Ottapalam 3-2; Express Money beat Sunrise 5-0; ISC B drew 1-1 with St Xaviers; United Kannur drew 1-1 with Victors Kannur; ISC Al Ain A beat Yuvakalasahithi 5-1 and Mina Sports scored a 7-1 win over Sunrise Abu Dhabi.
