Khalifa commends football teams

President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan yesterday received members of the national under- 19 and the under-17 football teams.

Abu Dhabi: President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan yesterday received members of the national under- 19 and the under-17 football teams.

The President congratulated the under-19 team for winning the Asia Cup against Uzbekistan and qualifying for the World Cup in Egypt next year.

He also congratulated the under-17 team who won the Asia Cup, and qualified for the under-17 World Cup to be held in Nigeria next year.

Shaikh Khalifa ordered a cash gift of Dh500,000 for each player of the under-19 team and Dh300,000 for each of the under-17 team member in appreciation of their great efforts and making the nation proud.

Shaikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, a number of shaikhs and senior officials were present at the reception.

The national under-19 youth team put up a splendid performance to win the Asian Cup Championship which ended last weekend in Dammam to book a place in the World U20 Youth Championship, slated for next year in Egypt.

The national Under-17, earlier last week also qualified to the World U17 Youth Championship finals, also slated for next year Nigeria.

Country first attitude

Commending the teams for making the country proud, Shaikh Khalifa said the achievement reflects the ability of the national youth to shoulder their responsibilities well and to make the country proud on the international arena.

The President affirmed the country's commitment to support the development of various sports and build a sporting youth fully equipped with high discipline and spirit.

He said a good sport nurtures the mind and creates a well-cultured generation that holds the reputation of their country and people at heart and place them first before anything else.
