Muscat: Yemen's fired head coach, Mohsin Saleh, expressed his sorrow for the way in which his relationship with the team was ended after the Yemen FA decided to terminate his contract following the 6-0 defeat against Saudi Arabia on Thursday.

"I am sad that my long relationship with the Yemeni team has come to an end in such a way." Saleh told Gulf News before leaving for Egypt.

"I was planning to resign after the end of the Gulf Cup because of my health but the YFA officials took a hasty decision and decided to end my career with the team."

Najeeb Al Awaj, the vice- chairman of the YFA, said: "Saleh contract was terminated because of the poor results and performances of the Yemen team in the tournament.

"His comments about leaving the team at the end of the tournament and that he will not continue with them till the next Gulf Cup which we host, forced our hand."
