Dubai: Following six years as captain of the England football team, David Beckham has stepped down from his position in a decision that he calls 'the most difficult of my career to date'.

While his tearful announcement came as a surprise to some English football fans, few had any charity for the midfielder, following the team's performance in the World Cup.

Michelle Rushton, 41, a full time mum, said: This is a good thing for the team. I think he stepped down preemptively because they just brought in a new coach and he felt that his position was in jeopardy.

I don't think he's going to get much more than Real Madrid because he's getting past his prime.

Ashley Blanchard, 19, student, said: This was expected because he's in his 30s. He didn't let the team down though, because they're all the same. He'll do fine because he'll always be David Beckham and really he's just a big advertisement.

Tom Street, 22, unemployed, said: I'm not bothered by David Beckham at all because he's overrated and I wouldn't put him on my team.

I'm glad he's stepped down because he wasn't the right choice for a captain in the first place. Steven Gerrard or John Terry is much better choices. The news that he stepped down made my day.

Colin Rushton, 71, just retired, said: It's about time for a change and his decision is not going to affect the team at all. As for his future, he's just getting too old to really have hope of getting any better.

Mark Ferrari, 35, a security personnel, said: I didn't really care about him as a captain. I was more offended by Sven as manager for the English team.

David Beckham's a great footballer, but he's not the right type for captain. I just think him and the whole England football team was useless and didn't deserve anything. And David Beckham is going to be fine and happy with Posh and the kids.

Sheila Barnett, 80, retired, said: I think he was a good captain and I don't think it's too good that he's stepped down because everyone looked up to him and he was a good role model.

He also boosted the team's morale and this isn't good for them. I don't think his career is over at all, he still has a lot to offer.
