Three Lions winger refuses to write off team in World Cup qualifiers
Dubai: England and Arsenal winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain believes the Three Lions can win their Fifa World Cup 2014 qualifying group, despite lingering two points behind Montenegro with four games to play.
Oxlade-Chamberlain, who has 10 caps and two goals for England, said: “It’s been an interesting campaign and a tough one as well. Other teams in the group have posed different challenges for us. Montenegro have been the stand-out candidates and have done very well so far, but we can’t get too carried away or think much further beyond our next game [at home to Moldova in September].”
Oxlade-Chamberlain, the son of former England winger Mark Chamberlain, who scored once in eight national team appearances from 1982 to 1984, added: “We’ve got some hard games left but we know what we need to do. The manager [Roy Hodgson] has told us how he wants us to go about it and he’s got all the boys singing off the same hymn sheet.
“As a footballing nation, England sets high standards and we definitely want to make sure we achieve our goal of qualification. Having been able to go to the Euros [in 2012] and having seen what a great event that is only makes you want to play in a World Cup even more. I know the rest of the England players feel the same and we are 100 per cent committed to finishing off in the right way and getting the right outcome.”
