Dubai: Ajman earned promotion to next season's professional football league after beating Masafi 1-0 by a goal scored by Diyara of Ivory Coast in the 75th minute of the Second Division match at Ajman Stadium on Friday.
Ajman finished runners-up with 65 points, 10 behind champions Al Khaleej who beat Dibba Fujairah 3-1 in another game at Khor Fakkan on Friday.
Shaikh Ammar Bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, Crown Prince of Ajman, attended the match and congratulated the players for earning promotion to the elite league after 18 years.
"It's a great achievement. The players, board, technical staff and supporters were all behind achieving this excellent success," said Shaikh Ammar.
"I hope the team will stay in the professional league and we will support them and provide them with every thing that can help them achieve good results," he added.
This will be the second such occasion when Ajman will feature in the top flight. They had earned promotion to the First Division League way back in 1990-1991, but could not retain their position and were relegated at the end of that season.
Shaikh Rashid Bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, the president of Ajman Club, was very happy with the team winning promotion. "Our main target will be to stay in the professional league and not slide back to the Second Division," Shaikh Rashid said.
Al Khaleej received the Second Division winners' trophy from Mohammad Khalfan Al Rumaithi, the FA board chairman.
