Sydney: Troubled Australian allrounder Andrew Symonds is said to be dealing with symptoms similar to those of compatriot Shaun Tait, who walked away from the game early this year due to mental and physical stress.
The all-rounder has not contacted any player since flying back to Australia after being banned from the current series against Bangladesh for breaching team discipline. A friend said Symonds was "angry, hurt and embarrassed," by the incident.
Symonds has been asked to complete a rehabilitation programme overseen by Cricket Australia medical staff, the Herald Sun newspaper reported on Tuesday.
He will be given as much time as he needs to re-establish his career, and is expected to seek professional help, sources said.
But his relationship with senior Australian players is believed to have fractured after he reacted furiously at being sent home. It is understood he exchanged heated words with stand-in captain Michael Clarke.
The allrounder is reportedly now spending time with family and friends. "He is still processing what it is he really wants," a friend of Symonds was quoted as saying in the Sydney Morning Herald.
