Dubai: Malcolm Speed, the International Cricket Council (ICC) chief executive, has seen the progress of the cricket stadium and the ICC Global cricket academy from its inception and is delighted with the quick progress over the years.

"Having been involved with this project from the beginning it is a great feeling to see it nearing completion. When I saw this site the first time it was a camel farm and now we have a world class cricket stadium come out of the ground.

It will be truly world class and will be exciting to watch the finishing touches put on it before the first match is played here within the next 12 months," Speed told Gulf News.

Speed is confident that the best teams will come and play here. "It is hard to predict at this stage as to what extent the international teams will come and play here but ICC will certainly encourage teams to play here as often as possible and use the new cricket stadium and the global cricket academy," he said.

Speed feels that the stadium will also provide great focus for cricket in the middle east.

"We have only been seeing the plans now for nearly three years and it is great to actually see that the plans have been transformed into bricks, mortar and steel," he said.
