Pakistan seal Fortune Cup win against West Indies
Abu Dhabi: For the second time in three days Pakistan came from behind to snatch victory and seal the three-match one-day Fortune Cup series with a 2-0 lead despite an unbeaten century from Shivnarine Chanderpaul.
After being restricted to 233 on a good batting track, Pakistan hit back to take wickets at regular intervals and wrap up the series with a 24-run win.
Umer Gul picked up three wickets while Chanderpaul remained unbeaten on 107. The final one-dayer will be played on Sunday.
The West Indies' run chase began disastrously when Sohail Tanvir yorked Chris Gayle in the very first over and then had Sewnarine Chattergoon caught behind to reduce West Indies to 14 for two.
That brought the experienced pair of Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Ramnaresh Sarwan, and the two steadied the innings. Sarwan almost got his second successive half century but was trapped leg before by Afridi for 45 after sharing a 92-run partnership with Chanderpaul for the third wicket.
Chanderpaul went on to complete his half century but soon saw Xavier Marshal and Shawn Findlay being run out. Chanderpaul completed his century but kept losing partners at the other end and had to finish on the losing side.
Earlier a rejuvenated West Indies restricted Pakistan to 233 with Jerome Taylor and Daren Powell picking up three wickets each.
After Shoaib Malek won the toss and elected to bat, West Indies struck two early blows and from then on the Pakistan innings stuttered against some tight bowling and fielding.
Taylor, who was hit for 17 runs in the final over as Pakistan snatched victory in the series opener, struck early when he pulled off a great catch off his own bowling to dismiss Salman Butt. At the other end Powell sent Khurram Manzoor's off stump cart-wheeling and later dismissed the other half-centurion Younis Khan for 34 to leave Pakistan struggling at 58 for 3 in the 14th over.
Misbah-ul-Haq made up for his easy dismissal on Wednesday- again playing his now infamous reverse sweep- when he battled against a disciplined West Indies attack. Displaying a lot of patience, Misbah began to rebuild the Pakistan innings despite losing skipper Malek to a run-out.
With the spinners in operation, runs were at a premium, but both Misbah and Kamran Akmal decided to take singles and twos against some tight fielding. Misbah completed his half century with just one boundary but fell to Miller soon after. With not a single boundary being conceded by the West Indians between the 15th and 38th over and playing to the situation Akmal also had just one boundary in his well-compiled 45.
Then came 'Boom Boom' Afridi and the Pathan did not disappoint his supporters though his brief knock of 28 had one big six which sent the crowd wild and asking for more. More did come, but from Sohail Tanvir, who spoilt Taylor's smart figures with three consecutive boundaries.
