Javed's breezy century helps UAE beat hapless Singapore

Oman rout Bahrain by 108 runs while Afghanistan trounce China

Dubai: Amjad Javed cracked a breezy 115 off just 58 balls, studded with 11 boundaries and eight sixes to help the UAE register a 62-run victory over Singapore on the opening day of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Twenty20 tournament at Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

The 12-nation event took off at three venues in UAE on Sunday. At the Abu Dhabi Shaikh Zayed Cricket Stadium, Oman beat Bahrain by 108 runs. At Al Dhaid, Afghanistan trounced China by nine wickets.

Brilliant start

Singapore won the toss and elected to field. UAE openers Javed and Mohammad Iqbal provided a brilliant start putting on 130 runs. Iqbal hit 67 off 37 balls with four boundaries and five sixes.

Skipper Khoram Khan steered UAE past the 200-run mark but fell for 17, bowled by Pramod Raja. Javed stayed on till the score reached 208 before he also fell to Raja. The UAE recorded 219 for 5.

Singapore lost their opener Chetan Suryawanshi for seven. Buddhika Mendis and skipper Chaminda Ruwan put on 77 runs for the second wicket. Left arm-spinner Ahmad Raza struck repeatedly to dismiss Ruwan for 32 and Mendis for 51.

Singapore crashed out for 157.

UAE beat Singapore by 62 runs. UAE 219 for 5 in 20 overs. Singapore 157 .

At Shaikh Zayed Stadium: Oman beat Bahrain by 108 runs. Oman 219 for 5 in 20 overs. Bahrain: 111 for 7 off 20 overs.

At Al Dhaid: Afghanistan beat China by 9 wickets. China: 37 off 17.5 overs Afghanistan: 40 for 1 off 4 overs.
