I'm not thinking about records, says Tendulkar
History beckons Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar who is close to becoming the world's highest Test scorer.
Colombo: History beckons Indian batting maestro Sachin Tendulkar who is close to becoming the world's highest Test scorer.
Tendulkar, who has amassed 11,183 runs in his career needs just 172 runs to surpass West Indies great Brian Lara.
He is also two catches short of reaching another personal milestone, of 100 catches.
Tendulkar talked to Gulf News about the records that are there for the taking.
Gulf News: You need only 172 runs to be the highest run-getter in the history of test cricket.
Sachin Tendulkar: Well, I'm not thinking at all about the record. For me, records are made to be broken and I am not in a hurry. Neither there is any pressure on me to score those runs quickly. I know it well that if anybody plays in international cricket for 17-18 years, he can reach some milestones like this. Yes, when I reach there, it will be a record and of course I'll be happy, but at the moment I am not thinking about it.
You can bowl almost all types of deliveries. But can you bowl the 'carrom' ball?
No, I cannot. I did not try it even!
Have you ever faced it?
No, I am yet to face it.
In Mumbai, they say it is a 'pichki' delivery.
Yes, I am aware of it, but as I had already old you, I am yet to face such kind of a delivery.
So, what will be your strategy to face the 'carrom' ball?
See, my target is to play the ball according to its merit and nothing else. It would be a new experience for me. Even after playing 17-18 years, there is something new. That is why I say, cricket is always a learning process.
You have a tremendous record in the Sinhalese Sports Ground?
Well, you feel good when you come back to the ground where you had done well previously. Similarly, I like to go back to Sydney always. But each innings is new fro a cricketer and you have to concentrate hard to score in international cricket.
Do you know you have 98 catches in Test cricket?
Yeah, somebody had informed me about it. I know I need two more catches to reach another milestone in Test cricket. And there are too many cricketers with more than 100 catches, too. But it will be great to achieve that, definitely.
Can you recollect the best catch you had ever taken?
Yes, that catch of Allan Lamb at the Lord's in 1990. I had to run a lot to catch it and picked it up just above the ground. So, it was special.
