Dubai to honour Indian World Cup winners

Dubai: The Indian team that created history at Lord's cricket ground twenty five years ago by lifting the World Cup will be honoured at the Atlantis Hotel, Dubai, on October 23.

All 14 members of the squad will attend a gala dinner function being organised by Grandstand Arabia, a joint venture from the Channel 2 Group Corporation and The Media Factory.

Announcing the event, Ajay Sethi, the chairman of Channel 2 Group Corporation, said: "It is a huge honour to be able to bring in this team that made India proud 25 years ago. It will be a night of reflection, remembrance and celebrations."

More than 1,200 invites are expected to attend. "There will be question-answer sessions and players will share their thoughts, memories and anecdotes about the win," added Sethi.

Kapil Dev, the man who led the team to victory, said: "Our victory at Lord's was a huge moment for us as players and a nation as a whole. I am delighted that our efforts are still being remembered by everyone. It will be a great for all of us to be honoured in a city like Dubai."

The 'Legends of Lord's' have already been honoured in Bangalore, New Delhi and at Lord's.

"For all of us the victory at Lord's was the best cricketing moment of our life. We are fortunate that we are all able to attend the function together. It is something which even the victorious West Indies team cannot do it as Malcolm Marshall has passed away. During the reunion at Lord's we were allowed to go to the pitch and to the balcony to relive the moment," remarked Sunil Gavaskar.
