Dar upholds support for review system in Tests

ICC umpire of the year Aleem Dar has backed the use of the controversial umpire decision review system in Test cricket

"I know some umpires don't agree with this system but I think it will help reduce the chances of mistakes made on the field," Pakistan's Dar told reporters at a function held in his honour in Karachi.

The Indian cricket Board has refused to enforce the referral system during the ongoing Test series with Sri Lanka while South African cricket authorities have also turned it down for their home series against England.

The dissenting boards want the ICC to foot the costs of technology needed to implement the system.

Following a trial in four Test series, the International Cricket Council (ICC) approved the review system on a permanent basis in June.

Two chances

Under the system, players are allowed to challenge close umpiring calls with each side having two chances to challenge an umpire's decision and send it to the third umpire for adjudication.

There have been concerns that the authority of the umpires would be undermined, although the ICC said the positives far outweighed the negatives.

Dar said that he supported the use of any technology that made the life of umpires easier. "It is a tough job out there nowadays and the review system is helpful for the umpires if used properly," he said.
