Dubai: Chennai Super Kings registered a challenging 163 for 5 against Rajasthan Royals despite a three-wicket spell from Yousuf Pathan, backed by brilliant fielding, in the final of the Indian Premier League at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy Stadium in Mumbai.

Suresh Raina top scored with a quick 43 but skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni through an unbeaten 29 runs saw his team cross the 150-run mark.

Rajasthan won the toss but elected to field first. Chennai's in-form opener Parthiv Patel, provided a brilliant start, unleashing a few lofted shots off Sohail Tanvir and Shane Watson.

Well-placed shots

Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan, son of former Tamil Nadu opener V. Sivaramakrishnan, too played some well-placed shots and the pair put on 29 runs in just four overs.

Sivaramakrishnan slashed at Watson over the wicketkeeper to the third man boundary for a six and in the next over Patel too slashed Munaf Patel in the same direction for a four.

Skipper Shane Warne introduced Yousuf Pathan in the sixth over and he struck with the second ball of his over. Sivaramakrishnan, playing a pull shot to mid wicket, was brilliantly caught by Ravindra Jadeja, who sprinted and dived forward to take a super catch.

Suresh Raina joined Patel and the score went past the 50-run mark. Warne introduced himself in the eighth over but it was Pathan who struck again in the next over. Patel, trying to run the ball down to third man, ended up edging the ball in the hands of wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal. His 38 runs off 33 balls had five boundaries.

Raina accelerated the run rate, lifting Warne over long on for six. Albie Morkel of South Africa, who joined Raina, also lifted Warne for a towering six to deep mid wicket. Morkel also hit Pathan for a six to deep midwicket but fell to the next ball, caught by Akmal despite colliding with Mohammad Kaif.

In walked skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Chennai reached the 100 run mark in 13.2 overs.

Dhoni too lifted Warne for a straight six, but it was Raina who dazzled with some lovely shots. With five overs to go, Warne introduced Tanvir again but Raina straight drove him for a well-timed four.

Warne got the vital breakthrough when Watson had a freely stroking Raina caught by Jadeja at long on for 43.
