He received his prize, courtesy of Gulf News and MoneyGram International, at the newspaper’s offices on Thursday.
The 58-year-old Lalchand, originally from Mumbai, India, expressed his delight at winning, following his correct answers via SMS to cricketing questions posed by Gulf News to readers.
Lalchand said he would leave for the final on Friday with his wife Deepa but admitted the only downside was that, whatever the outcome of the semi-finals, the game wouldn’t involve their native India.
“I’m very happy,” said Lalchand.
“I think it will be Sri Lanka versus West Indies in the final.”
“Since India were knocked out, I’ve been following the West Indies because of Chris Gayle. He’s been hitting sixes and fours every ball. It’s been a great tournament and this format is exciting to watch.
“This will be my first live World Cup final and I’m extremely grateful to Gulf News and MoneyGram International.”
