Asaduddin, a chip of the old block

While he was still playing cricket, Mohammad Azharuddin often used to ask why Donald Bradman's son John did not play cricket, or, why Garfield Sobers's son Daniel became a hotelier.

Kolkata: While he was still playing cricket, Mohammad Azharuddin often used to ask why Donald Bradman's son John did not play cricket, or, why Garfield Sobers's son Daniel became a hotelier.

Azhar, who played 99 Test matches, is a happy man now that his son Asaduddin has finally reached a stage where he can be seen on a cricket field.

"He is only 18 years old. Still raw. But one thing I can tell you, he knows the art of scoring runs," Azhar said.

Asaduddin's batting style is totally different from his dad's - he is a left-hander, for one.

Also, Asad is not as good a fielder as his father was.

"I am taller than papa," Asad said.

"I am six feet two inches. I may gain some more height."

Kolkata Knight Riders, owned by Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan, has invited youngsters from all over India for the coming season and Asad is one of them.

People think the youngster is a middle-order batsman. "Actually, I am an opener," he said.

Flick, glance, late cut and lofted strokes were his father's forte, but young Asad has his own preferred strokes.

The youngster said: "I enjoy pulling. So pull is my favourite shot."

Although Azhar spends these days in Mumbai, Asad has flourished as a cricketer in Hyderabad.

But his favourite cricketer comes from further afield, although many would argue he best is behind him.

Asad said: "Matthew Hayden (is my favourite player). He is a great player. I like the way he attacks the bowlers."

The young batsman said he was still a student, both of the game and in the wider world.

He said: "I am yet to finish my graduation. Business management is my subject," he said.

Coincidentally, Asad will be tested by John Buchanan and Sourav Ganguly at the Eden Gardens.

That was the same venue where Azhar made his debut in 1984-85.

Also, Ganguly made his debut when Azhar was the captain of the side.

And, in all probability, if Asad does gets selected, he will make his debut under Ganguly.
