Ogogo to become a Golden Boy
British middleweight joins Oscar de la Hoy’s boxing stable
“Anthony Ogogo has everything you look for in a boxer,” said Richard Schaefer, chief executive of Golden Boy Promotions. “He can fight, he has style and charisma and he has amazing crossover potential. I have no doubt that Anthony has the skills in the ring and the personality outside of it to make him a global boxing star.
“We are proud to have him on our team and this is just the first step in our growing commitment to British boxing.”
In a statement released in Los Angeles, Golden Boy officials said they were pleased to add another British boxer to their stable, after working with such British fighters as Amir Khan, Ricky Hatton and David Haye.
“To represent my country at a home Games was an incredible experience and the bronze medal I won will always be close to my heart,” Ogogo said in the statement. “Following the Olympics I’ve been looking to the future and considering a number of options and feel that the time is now right to turn professional with Golden Boy.”
Ogogo beat Ukrainian world champion Ievgen Khytrov in the last 16 en route to the final four at the London Games, but he had to settle for bronze after falling 16-9 in the semi-finals to Brazil’s Esquiva Falcao.
Ogogo had endured an emotional few months after his mother Teresa suffered a brain haemorrhage.
