Indian society in bid to inspire young talent
The Indian Basketball Society (IBS) will stage an Under-13 league tournament for boys and girls to boost budding talent at the schools level.
Dubai: The Indian Basketball Society (IBS) will stage an Under-13 league tournament for boys and girls to boost budding talent at the schools level.
The third edition of the Indian Basketball League, set to commence from April 11, will have five girls' and seven boys' schools competing for the top honour.
"We are aiming to get sponsorship support to start a scholarship scheme for the outstanding young players and provide them opportunities to play in international events," remarked G. Vijayakumar, Secretary of the IBS.
This year's league will be held at the Sharjah Al Theeqa Club for Handicapped. Nine men's and five women's teams will compete.
Blade Watches Hustlers are the defending champions of the men's league. They beat Dubai Hoopers 58-51 in a tense final. Al Abbas Group won the women's league title. They will be playing this year as Blade Watches.
Sponsorship deal
The schools that are participating in the Under-13 event are The Millennium School, Dubai, Dubai Modern School, Our Own English School, Dubai and Al Warqaa, New India Model School, Sharjah, Emirates National School, Sharjah and Delhi Private School, Dubai and Sharjah.
"A total of 93 matches will be held during the next two months every Thursday, Friday and Saturday," said Rajan Job, the President of the IBS. The league has got sponsorship support from Dr Sunny Medical Centre, Sharjah, ETA-Star and UAE Exchange Centre.
"All the matches will be officiated by international and national referees from India. Any player with a valid Indian passport and a resident of UAE or on visit or transit visas will be eligible to play in the league," said T. Ali, Chairman of the technical committee.
