- Kenya's Faith Chepngetich Kipyegon (L), Ethiopia's Genzebe Dibaba and United Arab Emirates' Betlhem Desalegn compete in the women's 1500m heats at the athletics event of the London 2012 Olympic Games on August 6, 2012 in London.
Running alongside the likes of Ethiopia’s Genzebe Dibaba and American Morgan Uceny in the third and final heat, the Emirati was well in control among the top pack for much of the race. But as the finish line neared she found the pace a bit too much and started sinking into the background, eventually finishing 14th in 4min 14.07sec.
Turkish Gamze Bulut made a strong finish to pip Morgan at the line with a time of 4:06.70, the second fastest in qualifying.
In the first heat, Ethiopia’s Abeba Aregawi qualified with a time of 4:04.57, leaving Bahrain’s Maryam Jamal in third place.
In the second heat, the win went to Great Britain’s Lisa Dobriskey (4:13.33), leaving Moroccan Shiham Hilali in second in a photo finish.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Abbas will be the last athlete from the UAE who will be involved at London 2012 when he tries to qualify for the men’s triple jump tomorrow. Should Abbas place among the top-12, then he will earn a berth in the final scheduled for Thursday evening.
