Abu Dhabi: Said Aouita, one of the world's greatest middle-distance runners, believes that road races have found their niche in the UAE.
Speaking to Gulf News on the sidelines of yesterday's Zayed International Race, the Moroccan track star said: "Middle and long distance running is slowly catching up in the region and with competitions like this Zayed International Race, a crop of promising youngsters will come up."
Asked if his children had an interest in athletics, the two-time Olympic medallist said: "I do not want to force them, but if they like it they can take up the sport."
Aouita's daughter is studying medicine in Dubai.
"Since I work in Qatar, I am always looking for excuses to come to the UAE, particularly Dubai.
"It is such a vibrant city and with my daughter studying here now, I make frequent trips to the emirates."
Aouita is now based in Qatar, where he works as an expert commentator for the Al Jazira sport channel.
"I am thoroughly enjoying my job in Qatar," said the star, who still looks supremely fit.
Aouita is considered by many track and field experts to be the most versatile runner ever. He still holds the world record in the 1,500, 2,000, 3,000, and 5,000 metres and the two miles.
He also won the gold medal in the 5,000 metres at the 1984 Los Angeles Games and the 800m bronze at the 1988 Seoul Games.
