Dubai: “I might talk to 20 people in one ER shift, but can reach over five million followers through social media,” said Dr Trevor Stork from the medical talk show The Doctors, at the opening session of the Arab Social Media Summit on Tuesday.

Referring to the impact and accessibility of social media platforms, Dr Stork pointed out that most people have the desire to live a healthy life.

“We make over 200 health decisions a day that determine how well and how wrong we live,” he said.

While many chronic illnesses that can lead to death are silent, it is important for each individual to be educated and aware of their bodies, said Dr Stork. “Without health it’s difficult to be happy, and difficult to be productive at work. Never before have we been given the opportunity to spread the word like we can on social media,” he added.

Comparing the difference between age groups who watch the show, The Doctors, and the show’s online following on social media, Dr Stork pointed out the importance of following credible sources when it comes to medical advice and daily health hacks.

He urged the audience “let food be your medicine, not your poison,” and encouraged them to engage in one active hobby a day. “One hour of work-out a day is four per cent of your day. It is not exercise if you enjoy it,” said Dr Stork.
