Using mobile phones while driving also witnessed a decline from 8,910 violations in 2016 to 5,403 in 2017.

The traffic violations have been recorded from January until May 21 this year.

Police attributed the decline in accident rates to the effect of the awareness campaigns for motorists and road users which are a part of the strategic plan of the Ministry of Interior to ensure all roads in the UAE are safer.

The decline was also attributed to the significant role played by various social media in highlighting the awareness campaigns held by the police and promoting good driving practices.
