Sharjah: Sharjah Police will instal parking monitors equipped with video cameras across the city’s vital places, malls and outside supermarkets to deter able-bodied drivers from taking up parking spots reserved for disabled motorists.
Police are already trialling one radar installed at Al Qaryan Cooperation Society on January 10, before undertaking an emirate-wide roll-out.
According to Major Mohammad Alai Al Naqbi, director of the Traffic and Patrol Department at Sharjah Police, the radar is solar-powered and will be installed in the parking lots of shopping malls, public parks and other vital areas in the emirate.
“This will help people who are disabled to reach places easily,” Major Al Naqbi said. “Illegal parking in disabled parking areas is not acceptable and does not take into consideration their rights.”
The initiative will help nab motorists illegally parking in disabled slots and also help in identifying those misusing disability stickers despite not having a person with disability present in the car.
The radar first sends out a 60-second alarm when a car enters a specified disabled-parking space.
If the car does not leave the spot, a photograph and video are taken and information about the offender is sent to the police.
Violators will be fined Dh1,000 and given six black points for parking in a disabled zone.
