Sharjah: The sense of safety index in Sharjah jumped from 86 per cent to 92.1 per cent 2016 and the emirate is aiming for a hundred per cent strike rate, it was revealed during an police interaction meet on Monday. The police also revealed plans to push the pace of work, including its Internal Accelerators programme, towards decreasing the crime rate and realise the UAE’s National Agenda 2021 vision of making the country one of the world’s safest and most secure countries.

Lt. General Shaikh Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, issued directives for the implementation of government accelerators in the indexes of all Ministry of Interior sectors to guarantee performance efficiency, to advance the UAE community’s quality of life and the Ministry of Interior’s strategic partnership system.

Brigadier Saif Al Ziri Al Shamsi, Sharjah Police commander-in-chief highlighted a range of efforts by Sharjah Police to provide safety and security for its residents and enhance their quality of life.

The police recorded a drop in crime rate by 17.5 per cent from December 15 to February 15 this year, informed Brig Al Shamsi. The serious crime rate indicator shows 123.5 per cent drop in crimes per 100,000 inhabitants and Sharjah Police plans to reach a target of 75 serious crimes per 100.000 inhabitants by 2021, he added

To achieve these goals, the traffic police will make all efforts to implement the traffic safety standard on five key roads, including Maliha, Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road, Emirates Road, Al Ittihad and Sharjah-Al Dhaid roads, which witnessed multiple traffic-related deaths.

Brigadier Mohammad Rashid Bayat, Director General of Police Operations, said that in order to achieve this target, the police is focusing on home burglaries in hot zones including Abu Shagara, Maysaloon, Al Mussala and Al Majaz, which recorded a high rate of 287 thefts crimes in 2016.

The police plan to reduce thefts to 10 per cent during 100 days by intensifying patrols, spreading awareness among residents of these areas. Once the target is achieved, they will implement the strategy in other areas. Brigadier Ali Salem Al-Khayal, Director General of Central Operations, said the police have achieved the goal of responding to emergency in 10 minutes and currently are working on reducing response time to 4 minutes by 2021. To reach this goal, the police is working on upgrading the operation room and introducing motorbikes and electric bikes as well as other measures to speed up response time. “Traffic congestion is the main challenge to accomplish this goal,” said Brig Al Khayal.

Brigadier Abdullah Mubarak bin Amer, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Sharjah Police, revealed that the project ‘Sharjah is a safe city’ is proceeding at a measured pace. 182 cameras have been installed during the last period and by next month, the number of cameras will reach 250.

He pointed out that this project is vital for ensuring security and safety in the emirate, and the plan is to install 500 advanced cameras in vital and crowded places. Currently, more than 9,000 cameras are connected to the police operation room, including vital establishments, government departments, residential and commercial buildings in addition to fixed and mobile radars.
