Sharjah: Sharjah Municipality has launched a campaign to educate people about the hazards of barbeques at beaches and in open green spaces.

Nada Saeed Al Suwaidi, Director of Corporate Communications Department in the Municipality said that dumping barbeque waste, such as coal and ashes on beaches and green spaces negatively impact the environment and public health while also spoiling the aesthetic appeal of the city.

She also stressed that the campaign aims to educate the public about the municipality’s rules and regulations with regard to violators.

She said the campaign, which is being implemented in coordination with the the Corporate Communications Department and a number of other departments at the municipality, seeks to reach the largest number of people.

Nada added that the campaign seeks to effectively deter barbeques in locations other than those designated for the purpose by issuing directives and distributing brochures and recyclable plastic bags to UAE citizens and residents.

She said the municipality has put in place signs that warn visitors to beaches and open green spaces against violating municipal regulations and the fines that will be applicable for those starting coal fires or throwing ashes around.

The official said the campaign comes as part of a series of campaigns and awareness programmes organised by the municipality throughout the year to raise awareness and educate the public about the risks posed to the environment as a result of wrong practices of members of the public. She also called upon residents to cooperate with the municipality and abide by the regulations and laws for the benefit of everyone.
