Sharjah: Five people lost their lives in traffic accidents in the emirate during the first 22 days of Ramadan, figures reveal.

There were 22 traffic accidents in total, some 28 people were injured, five suffered serious injuries and 11 sustained moderate injuries.

Sharjah traffic police statistics showed that there was a drop in the number of accidents and the number of those injured compared with the same period last year.

In 2013 during the same period 38 people were injured in 26 accidents. There were three deaths, five people were seriously injured and 19 sustained moderate injuries.

In Dubai, the first 15 days of Ramadan saw 30 traffic accidents that caused four deaths and 20 injuries, 55 vehicles were involved.

As Eid is approaching, Sharjah Police have launched a traffic awareness campaign called “Eid without accidents”

Colonel Shawaf Abdul Rahman, Director of Sharjah traffic police and patrols, said the campaign aims to raise awareness among the public to abide by traffic regulations and cooperate with traffic officers to ensure smooth traffic flow.

Sharjah Police will also intensify their patrols as part of the campaign, especially in areas that are prone to traffic congestion, such as around malls and parks. This is to ensure an accident-free environment and smooth traffic flow.

There will also be more patrols in residential areas.

Colonel Abdul Rahman said that Sharjah Police will not go easy on people who flout traffic laws, especially those who drive recklessly.

Sharjah Police will also distribute traffic awareness brochures during Eid.
