Dubai: The Department of Economic Development’s (DED) Intellectual Property Rights Protection wing has seized a huge quantity of fake perfume worth Dh110 million, Dubai TV has reported.

It is the largest seizure of fake products in 2015. They were seized before being distributed on the local market. The seizure comes as part of DED’s effort to protect intellectual property rights of brand owners and trademark holders and to protect consumers from commercial fraud. The fake perfume bottles were stored in two gigantic warehouses in Dubai. Ebrahim Bahazad, director of the DED’s IPR Protection, said the seized perfume bottles carry trademarks and popular brands of international perfumes.

“A perfume bottle that was dropped on the doorstep of one of the warehouses led to the seizure of the fake perfume bottles,” he said.

Hazardous to health

The perfume bottles bear the logos of brands well known in local and international markets. He called on consumers to refrain from buying fake perfumes because they are made from petrol products and harmful substances that may cause serous medical problems.
