Dubai: A salesman landed in trouble when he went to a police station to deliver some items to his detained friend and ended up being arrested for using someone else’s Emirates ID.

The 33-year-old Indian salesman was said to have gone to the police station to deliver some personal belongings to his detained friend in October.

When the policewoman asked him for his Emirates ID, according to records, to register his name in the system, she discovered that he had handed her someone else’s ID.

As the policewoman keyed in the ID details into the system, she realised that the bearer of the ID was wanted for absconding from his sponsor, said records.

The salesman was immediately taken into custody.

Prosecutors accused him of using someone else’s Emirates ID.

When he showed up before the Dubai Court of First Instance, the suspect pleaded not guilty.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors said the suspect used an Emirates ID that belonged to someone else.

“It happened by mistake. I walked into the police station and instead of using my ID, I gave them the other Emirates ID by mistake. It was in my wallet but I did not intend to use it,” the 33 year old told presiding judge Urfan Omar.

A policewoman testified to prosecutors that the suspect walked towards her counter wanting to hand over some goods for one of the detainees.

“When he handed me the Emirates ID, the system showed that the bearer of that ID was wanted. I double-checked with him, and he claimed that it was his ID. The suspect was apprehended instantly,” she claimed to prosecutors.

A ruling will be heard on December 15.
