Abu Dhabi: Municipal authorities have once again cautioned residents against slaughtering animals at places other than designated slaughterhouses in order to maintain public hygiene and safety.

The Department of Municipal Affairs, Abu Dhabi emirate’s municipal regulatory authority, in a statement on Tuesday also warned against hiring the services of unlicensed butchers, who may not have any credentials to detect veterinary diseases.

Violators will invite on-the-spot fines of Dh500, and carcasses will be confiscated.

On the other hand, municipal slaughterhouses include trained vets who check on the health of animals before they are processed. The services are Sharia-compliant, and also allow for the hygienic disposal of waste.

According to the Department, abattoirs have disposed of 198 animals unfit for human consumption during the first 20 days of Ramadan alone.

The statement also announced that preparations are currently under way across the emirate to receive a greater number of customers at slaughterhouses during the upcoming Eid festivities.

Customers in the capital will be able to visit the Abu Dhabi Public Slaughterhouse in Mina area, as well as the facilities in Al Shahama and Bani Yas, between 6am to 6pm during Eid.

Al Wathba Modern Slaughterhouse, on the other hand, will operate from 8am to 4pm. The facilities have processed more than 41,300 animals between them during the month of Ramadan alone.

By the end of the Eid break, the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City says that 55,000 animals will have been processed.

In Al Ain, slaughterhouses will be open from 6am to 7pm. During the three days before Eid, Al Ahaali Slaughterhouse at the Central Livestock Market at Al Yahar Slaughterhouse will also be open during certain hours of the night.

Facilities in the Western Region, including those at Madinat Zayed, Gayathi, Sila, Liwa, Dalma Island and Al Marfaa, will also be operational on Eid days.
