Khartoum: A cargo plane has crashed near the airport in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum on Monday, media and witnesses said.

No immediate details can be confirmed but media reports suggest that the plane was carrying a crew of seven Russians, none of whom survived the crash.

"The plane crashed in an empty area about one or two kilometres from the airport," said one witness, asking not to be named.

"Parts of the plane are lying everywhere. There are huge patches of dark engine oil."

Initial reports said the crash was followed by a large explosion in a residential area near the airport.

Another witness also said a large explosion was heard when the plane crashed and that flames had billowed from the area.

Officials at the aviation department could not be reached immediately for comment.
