Beirut: The Lebanese government on Tuesday accused Hezbollah of violating the country's sovereignty for operating its own communications network and installing spy cameras at Beirut airport.
The cabinet said they would take legal action against Hezbollah’s network, which they described as an “attack on the country’s sovereignty”.
According to security sources, Hezbollah has an extensive fixed-line telecommunications network ranging from south and east Lebanon to Beirut's southern suburbs.
Hezbollah responded by saying the communications network was integral in their war against Israel in 2006, adding that the cabinet “could not stop us from defending ourselves and defending the country”.
The government also accused Hezbollah of installing a secret airport camera to monitor activity of a Beirut runway.
The cabinet sacked the airport security chief, and described the cameras as another violation of rule.
Hezbollah said cameras were erected near the airport to monitor goods stored there, not to monitor activity.
But leaders accuse Hezbollah of spying on their movements.
This latest conflict will only further the crisis in Lebanon, which has left the state without a president for five months.
