Hundreds of people will take up a 24-hour walkathon challenge on Friday to raise awareness about cancer and raise funds for the treatment of cancer patients.

Organised by Friends of Cancer Patients (FoCP), the ‘Relay for Life’ has already seen 1,700 people signing up for the Middle East’s first ever 24-hour walkathon challenge.

One of the biggest fund-raisers for increasing cancer awareness and support for cancer patients, the walkathon will have 52 schools, six universities, eight sponsors, 34 authorities and 67 cancer survivors among the participants.

To be held at the American University of Sharjah (AUS), the walkathon will begin at 4pm on Friday and culminate on Saturday at the same time.

FoCP is calling for more supporters to take part by either registering online or throughout the day of the walkathon.

Dr. Sawsan Al Madhi, Director-General of FoCP, believes the immense public support for ‘Relay for Life’ reflects their understanding that every individual can make a difference.

“Any contribution, no matter how great or small is an invaluable addition in the campaign to raise awareness, and with Relay for Life people are giving more than their money, they are giving their time and showing their commitment,” said Dr. Al Madhi.

He added that there is a very real desire to participate rather than simply donate and the 1,700 people who have registered so far have answered that call.

“I am certain we will see even greater interest as the event progresses and we would urge as many people as possible to play a part in what is not only a worthy cause but also an exciting social occasion,” he said.

Activities

Over 40 entertainment activities will take place around the clock during ‘Relay for Life’, including a host of live bands and DJs, as well as comedy acts, poetry and storytelling.

Sports activities like also American football, golf, bubble soccer, and jousting will also be held.

Activities bouncy castles, games, arts and crafts, face painting, movies and a soft play area will keep the children entertained.

Some relaxing moments for the adults include spinning classes, Pilates, doodling and yoga, and for the more energetic, boot camp, power stretching, Zumba and core express will work up a sweat.

Members of the public can pre-register through the website www.focp.ae/relayforlifeuae or on-site during the event.
