Ras Al Khaimah: A detainee set fire to his detention cell at a Ras Al Khaimah police station, an official at Ras Al Khaimah Police told Gulf News.

A handful of detainees were given first aid.

According to the police, the detainee was sent to Al Mamourah police custody on charges of possession of narcotic substances.

He set his detention cell on fire by setting the mattresses and blankets of the detainees on fire.

The Civil Defence acted in time and contained the fire. The detainees were immediately moved to a safe open location. The police said the 26-year-old Egyptian detainee told police during interrogation that he set fire in the cell because they refused to concede to his demands, which are illegal. He asked police to provide him with narcotics substances. He claimed to be physiologically ill. He threatened to commit suicide in the cell if they did not respond to his demands, the official said.

The police, he said, would not succumb to such pressure tactics.

The detainee faces two charges — consuming drugs and setting fire to public property.

The case has been transferred to the Ras Al Khaimah public prosecution for further action, the official said.
