The inaugural UAE pop culture event, PopCon, has unveiled a list of attractions for the three-day event, to be held from October 27 to 29 at the Dubai Outlet Mall.
Hosted by reality star and former E! News presenter Giuliana Rancic, the family event will fuse comic book craze and pop culture mania, according to organisers.
UAE cosplayers will get a shot at the big league with a cosplay competition where they will get the chance to win Dh25,000 and qualify for the next international edition of Cage aka Cosplay Authority Global Challenge, including an all-expenses-paid trip.
Cosplay, for the uninitiated, is when people costume-play or dress up as their favourite TV, movie or comic-book characters. Registration is now open at popcon.com and will close October 16.
Other attractions include the Walk of Fame, which will feature Whilce Portacio, the creator of Marvel Comics character Bishop; Agnes Garbowska, who’s worked with many major comic book publishers including for titles such as My Little Pony, Jem and the Holograms for IDW, Transformers, G.I. Joe and Powerpuff Girls; Jason Palmer, best known for his illustration art of Firefly, Star Wars, Once Upon a Time and Indiana Jones; and David Yardin who has illustrated stories for DC Comics’ Injustice: Gods Among Us and Marvel Comics’ A+X, as well as covers for Thunderbolts, Storm, Magneto, Injustice: Gods Among Us Year Five and is currently the cover artist on Extraordinary X-Men.
In addition to the Walk of Fame and CAGE, there will be two other competitions taking place at PopCon hosted by Comicave — the Gundam Model Kit competition, for model building enthusiasts, and Magic The Gathering Tabletop Gaming competition, a card game tournament.
