Sharjah: Sharjah Police on Monday quashed a rumour circulating through the emirate that children’s candy contained narcotic substances.

Social media posts circulated rumours that routine packages of candy being sold in stores could be harmful because they had intoxicating material, police said.

Colonel Mohammad Rashid Byat, director of police operations at Sharjah Police, warned that people shouldn’t believe everything they read, especially on social media, which is notorious for dispersing information that is not only inaccurate but misleading.

He reminded social media users to be wary of sharing such messages without first checking the authenticity of the original posts.

“It is dangerous to circulate such rumours on social media without making sure the information is accurate,” he said.
Col Byat said residents, parents and educational institutions should be made aware of the latest round of rumours to avoid problems.

Col Byat said anti-narcotic departments are working hard to protect all community members.
