Sharjah: The Criminal Investigation Department of Sharjah Police said it has arrested two Asian men in connection with a case of impersonating police and cheating.

The suspects were charged with impersonating a police officer after they cheated an Indian national out of money exploiting the fact that the latter was wanted by security authorities in connection with several cases, an official at Sharjah Police said yesterday.

The two suspects were identified as M.M.H., an Indian, and H.M.W., a Pakistani.

Eastern Region Police said M.M.H. phoned the wanted man and claimed that he was a policeman and knew about his criminal record. M.M.H. offered to drop some of the charges against the latter if he paid him Dh5,000. He told him that he knew a police officer — the other suspect charged with impersonation — who would get some of the charges against him dropped.

A police team was formed to investigate the complaints and tracked down the suspects before setting a trap and arresting them.

The suspects were arrested as they received the money from the wanted man.

The suspects confessed to the charges and the case was transferred to the Khor Fakkan Public Prosecution Department. An official said: “We found out that the suspects were targeting people who did not have adequate knowledge about the legal procedures taken by the police or those who did not ask him for his police identity card.”

Police called on residents to be wary of falling victim to fraudsters and to always ask for identification when someone claimed to be from the police.

Police officers never ask people to show wallets or demand money, the official said calling on people who come across such individuals to report the matter to the police.
