Snapshot: A unique habitat
The Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD) says it is doing everything it can to support the mangroves in the Eastern Lagoon. Mangroves are found along the Khors and the lagoons. While the highest concentration and variety of mangrove forest can be found in Southeast Asia and Australia, the UAE supports around 110,000 square km of Avicenna marina or the black mangrove forest. In fact this is the only species that can withstand the highly saline and arid conditions of the Gulf. Mangroves act as a fish nursery and are a rich source of fish, shellfish, shrimp and other crustaceans. They are also frequented by many birds. mammals, and snakes which feed on the marine resources that thrive within the mangrove.
