In pictures: Dancing in Dubai
Ballet originated in the Italian Renaissance courts of the 15th century, and was further developed in France and Russia. The dance form highlighted by statuesque postures takes strength, precision and great skill to perfect. Here in Dubai, Gulf News photographer Zarina Fernandes visited the ballet centre in Jumeirah where children start their training in the beautiful dance form an early age. Three- and four-year-old ballerinas learn the basics and how to co-ordinate their movements gracefully to the music while pupils who are five or older practise their splits, jumps and pirouettes (whirls) as they try to get their balance and other gymnastics movements right.
