hoping for a miracle: Biju, Antony’s brother said they are worried how they will clear the huge hospital bills

Dubai A paralysed Indian worker earning a meagre salary is in a financial mess after having racked up more than Dh124,000 in hospital bills.

Christy Antony, 41, from Trivandrum, Kerala, an electrician for a private company in Dubai, was admitted to Rashid Hospital in the wee hours of May 26 after he was found unconscious in his Al Quoz accommodation by room-mates.

Brain stroke

Antony’s brother Biju said his blood pressure had shot up, causing blood to overflow into his brain. An urgent brain surgery was done, but Antony was rendered partially paralysed on the left side.

Biju, a driver-cum-baggage loader at Sharjah Airport, said he was informed of his brother’s condition the same morning.

“I was on night duty and somebody was trying to call me a couple of times on my mobile. When I answered, the caller informed me my brother was in a serious condition.

“When I went to see him in the morning, he had just come out of surgery and was covered in tubes. I was shocked and did not know what to tell our family back home,” a tearful Biju told XPRESS.

Antony has been in ICU ever since and has racked up a bill of over Dh120,000 at the hospital. The surgery and treatment amounted to around Dh92,000, while his medicine costs alone amount to Dh32,000.

“My brother is married with two small daughters aged four and two. I also have a family and have a responsibility towards them. How on earth are we going to pay the hospital bill? Even after he goes home we are going to need help to pay for a physiotherapist,” said Biju.

“He [Antony] cannot work for some time and someone will have to support his family as well. I am praying for a miracle that somebody will come forward to help my brother and our family,” said Biju.
