Director and actor Ashir Azeem will bring his politically charged action drama Maalik to the UAE on October 11.

An invitation-only screening will be held at City Centre Deira that evening with the stars, including Farhan Ally Agha, Sajid Hassan, Hassan Niazi and Adnan Shah.

The film releases in select UAE cinemas on October 13.

Maalik, which released in Pakistan briefly in April, revolves around a retired Special Forces Commando who is hired to protect a corrupt feudal lord who becomes a powerful chief minister.

Its Pakistan release was controversial.

The theme of corruption, and how the public shouldn’t tolerate it, was considered sensitive, and three weeks after its release, the federal government banned the film across Pakistan through a notification that failed to mention the reasons for the ban.

The decision to ban the film sparked debates on censorship and freedom of expression.

Azeem called the ban “unwarranted” and challenged the decision in court. On September 6, the Sindh High Court declared the federal government’s ban illegal and cleared it to be screened again.
