Net users could face a slower service over the next few days due to engineering works on cables, said officials.

Etisalat's internet arm eCompany said that undersea cables are being moved due to the building of an island off the coast of Fujairah.

"People might not even notice any difference. We will try to manage the traffic," said Abdullah Hashim, assistant general manager of eCompany.

People looking at local internet sites, such as banks, should not suffer any slowness at all, says Hashim. However, some functions like online gaming and peer to peer operations, in which a number of computers form a network, could be more heavily affected although likely to still operate.

Last year, two major internet cables were broken off the coast of India during heavy monsoons. The breakages knocked out eight of the UAE's 20 internet links to the outside world. Hashim said the effects of this week's scheduled engineering works would not be as severe.

"This is nothing in comparison. It cannot be compared to that," he said.

For the prices you pay do you feel that you get adequate internet services? Do you think that the connection speed is fast enough? Do you believe that service providers should be obliged to keep bandwidth free for online gaming purposes?

In certain areas in Sharjah, the landline internet line is slow and the ADSL line is not available. This is particularly bad in the area closer to the Dubai border.

It was with great amusement that I read your article concerning the slow down of the internet in Dubai. I was wondering if technologically can possibly slow the internet down any more than it already is in Dubai. Dubai likes to be top of many lists, well worst, slowest and most expensive internet provider would certainly top most polls. My parents back in the UK with dial up would beat UAE ASDL speeds hands down.
