In a campaign to highlight domestic abuse on women, “One photo a day in the worst year of my life” features a woman who appears to be a victim of violence and takes a picture of herself everyday for an entire year. The video was part of an awareness campaign by the Serbian organisation B92. The video gives an insight to the struggle of a victim of abuse and deconstructs the myth that violence only happens to poor or uneducated women. “The fact that media in Canada, France, Italy and the entire region reported about the video shows that this problem is not only present in our country. In just two days we made such an effect that almost the entire world wanted to see who the girl from the video was,” the B92 Fund Board of Directors president explained.
The focus of this week’s debate is on the opposite of raising awareness to save women around the world, rather the latest trend, music that glorifies violence against women and whether it should be banned?
These are the statements to be debated:
• Music depicting violence against women encourages men (and women) not to respect women.
• This type of music is degrading to everyone, not just women.
• To ban this type of music encourages the viewing of women as helpless, victim figures.
• Banning this type of music may expand the definition of violence and end up extending to other pieces of art, literature, film or news.
Participants will be required to clearly state whether they are ‘for’ or ‘against’ the statement and provide their supporting arguments for the same.
