Studies have found that factors like hostility from teachers and peers at school, abusive conditions at home, parental alcoholism, poverty, breakdown of the family, or death of parents can result in children turning into criminals. Michael Turner, an associate professor in the department of criminal justice and criminology at the University of North Carolina, USA, found that more than 20 per cent of victims of bullying had higher rates of criminal conviction and substance abuse, compared to those who were not bullied.
Statements to be discussed:
• Spreading awareness against bullying can prevent children from committing crimes in self-defence.
• Value-based education in schools is important to teach children that criminal behaviour is not tolerable.
• Violent video games incite kids to commit crime without the feeling of guilt.
• Juvenile delinquency would decrease if parents parented their children right.
• Parents should be held responsible for crimes that their child commits. So, if a child does the crime, should parents do the time?
Participants will be required to clearly state whether they are ‘for’ or ‘against’ the statement and provide their supporting arguments for the same.
