Competition is good as it forces companies to provide consumers with the best possible service and prices in order to win and maintain their custom and loyalty.

So the move by the UAE Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) to improve competition between the service providers in the country is likely to be good for consumers. The TRA has proposed regulations to allow operators to implement price changes and promotions without prior approval, enabling them to respond to offers to the market from their rivals, faster. The big hope is that this will lead to lower calling rates for consumers.

The TRA is right to use competition and the free market to try and improve prices and services for consumers and should be bold in its future moves.

While more competition between the two big players is good, three or even more large operators in the UAE will introduce the kind of competition that will bring greater benefits to consumers, faster.
