There is a need for calm in Syria — one that would bring about stability and a path to a peaceful future. The ongoing clashes between government forces and protesters would only deepen the divide in the country. And this should be avoided at all costs.
In the most recent clashes, Syrian forces killed 11 people in what is dubbed as a ‘vengeance' raid on a town near Damascus. Hundreds have also been arrested in the operation that was carried out. The reasoning behind the raid was the fact that these towns have provided provisions to the protesters. There were numerous people injured and protesters as young as 15 arrested. But this is just one example of what is taking place in Syria today. Many towns are subjected to the same systematic attack, disregarding age, gender or the fact that the protesters are unarmed. Undoubtedly, such an iron-fisted approach could go on unchallenged for some time as the balance of power is obvious. But that would not solve Syria's problems. Neither would it bring a peaceful end to the ongoing disturbances. Hence, it is time to open the doors to genuine talks.
