The editors of Newsweek magazine in the United States have crossed the line of good taste and sensibility. In its most recent issue, Newsweek features a splashy cover and colourful story on Princess Diana turning 50. With an imagination fed by sales, speculation and sheer audacity, they write knowingly on the views of Diana on the marriage of her son, William to Catherine Middleton. Diana died in a Paris tunnel 14 years ago but her legacy lives on. For the editors to try and harness her spirit smacks of greedy opportunism which has done nothing to improve the magazine's reputation.

This is a sad day for weekly news magazines. Journalists around the world are trying to come to grips with changing news values, where everyday citizens believe they are the guardians of the written word.

The editor should be put to work on one of Diana's favourite charities.
