Model of political stability continues
Dubai and the rest of the emirates can look confidently to the future.
With sorrowing hearts and tearful eyes, people of the UAE bade farewell to Shaikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum yesterday. Joined by leaders from close and far parts of the world, they lamented the loss of a loved leader who dedicated his life to the development of his country.
He will always remain in the hearts of the people, especially in Dubai, whose amazing transformation he oversaw from a desert town to a bustling metropolis.
But life goes on, and Dubai and the rest of the emirates can look confidently to the future as His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum the energetic young leader, steps in as Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai.
The wisdom of the members of the Supreme Council in quickly electing Shaikh Mohammad as vice-president and endorsing the proposal of President His Highness Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan to appoint him as prime minister has ensured citizens, the business community and the entire world, a good part of which depends on the UAE for energy supply, that the country is, and will always remain, a model of stability and political consistency. Because of that, in addition to its generosity, tolerance and peaceful policies, the UAE has gained the respect of all countries of the world.
This was evident in the presence of Arab and world leaders at the funeral of Shaikh Maktoum and the outpouring of tributes and condolence messages sent by world leaders.
But the most important tribute was paid by the UAE people who were keen to gather at the cemetery and Zabeel Palace to pay their final respects to the late leader and offer condolences and support to the UAE President and the Vice-President. This is the spirit which has made this country what it is.
